Questions about job centers and unemployment offices

What is an American Job Center?

A local office of the public workforce system funded by the U.S. Department of Labor. It gives free help with job search, career counseling, resumes, training referrals and information on filing for unemployment. Each state uses its own brand, such as Workforce Solutions in Texas or CareerSource in Florida.

Is a job center the same as an unemployment office?

Not always. Every state files unemployment claims online or by phone. Some states let you file or get claim help at job centers (Georgia, Florida, Iowa), while others say their centers cannot help with claims (Utah, Arizona). Each office page here says what the official listing confirms.

Are job center services free?

Yes. CareerOneStop, the U.S. Department of Labor locator, describes American Job Centers as providing free help to job seekers. Some programs, like paid training under WIOA, have eligibility rules.

How do I find the unemployment office near me?

Enter your ZIP code above or use your location. Results show the nearest centers, whether they are open now and whether the official listing confirms unemployment help. Your state page also lists the claims website and phone number.

How much does unemployment pay?

It depends on your state and past wages. Weekly maximums range from $235 in Mississippi to $1,208 in Washington. See the full table by state.
